The Cabin

The Cabin at William Leech

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn”  – IGNACIO ESTRADA

At William Leech, every child is valued as a unique gift from God. We nurture individual talents and inspire a love of learning, helping our pupils grow academically, spiritually and personally.

The Cabin at William Leech is our new specialist support base, a trauma-informed provision for Early Years and Primary aged pupils with complex needs supported by an EHCP – specifically Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and Speech and Language Communication Needs (SLCN). We provide a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment with wellbeing at the heart of everything we achieve here. All our pupil places are commissioned by the Northumberland Local Authority SEND Commissioning Panel.

Our holistic, adaptive model caters to the specific requirements of every pupil. Experienced staff lead by example to foster an environment that is supportive and enriching, allowing our pupils to grow and learn as individuals. By helping children overcome complex barriers to learning, we teach them to become resilient and realise their full potential, equipping them with essential skills for life as they prepare for adulthood.

Our Vision

Our vision is firmly rooted in all that we do; “Encourage one another and build each other up” (Thessalonians 5:1). At The Cabin, we believe relationships are what matters most in life. Our relational approach prioritises connections between staff, pupils, families and the local area. By hosting regular  parent drop-ins at stay and play sessions, we promote a deeper understanding of the pupils’ SEMH and SLCN challenges. We also provide parents and caregivers with bespoke resources and strategies, creating a network of support both at home and in school. We link closely with all involved professionals supporting our families and hold face to face meetings in our family room, wherever possible.

A Specialised and Bespoke Curriculum

Pupils engage with an ambitious, specialised curriculum delivered through individual and small-group learning. We limit classes to a small number of pupils to ensure a focused, personalised approach. These small teaching groups help mitigate the impact of adverse childhood experiences and trauma while promoting positive mental health. Each member of staff is committed to maintaining a warm, supportive culture where children feel safe to explore, ask questions and flourish.

Our curriculum implements a flexible and adaptive approach that allows for personalised and bespoke learning plans, incorporating therapeutic and emotional support. By integrating interoceptive awareness activities into the daily routine, we help children develop self-regulation and recognise the physiological responses that lead to emotional outbursts.

Future Transitions

The Cabin prepares children for a smooth transition as they move to their next stage of learning.
